Mission, BC:
The Robert Bateman's 'Think like a mountain'
event at Clarke Foundation theatre in Mission was an inspiring
event. Mr. Bateman showed selections of his Eagle paintings and
autographed his work for admiring fans during the Fraser Valley Bald
Eagle Festival, Nov 22' 03. Chilliwack's Chief Malloway opened the
ceremony with a joke -- "They asked me to show up like we did
in th old days but I've got my pants on." |

Golf: The Pitch Shot
Dick Whitlam
Aquadel Golf Course
A crude definition for the difference between a chip shot and a pitch
shot is; a chip shot is on the ground more than it is in the air and
a pitch shot is in the air longer than it is on the ground.
A pitch shot is longer than a chip shot and you will use a slightly more
complete swing than the abbreviated chip shot swing. Pitching the
ball is definitely one of the tougher shots in golf and most good
players try to avoid getting into a position where they have to use
it. The ball is usually 40 to 80 yards from the target. At that
distance most players can’t use a full swing so you must use a 1/2
to 3/4 type of swing.

This shot requires feel and proper swing mechanics to pull off. Usually
the player will be using some kind of wedge depending on the height
you want the ball to achieve. I can’t really explain how to feel the
distance of a shot, for that you will need to practise. Here are the
different steps for the proper mechanics. 1 Set- up to the ball with
your weight 60% on your weight on your left leg or front leg. ( I am
explaining this for a righthander so you lefties should reverse the
lefts and rights around.) 2 Play the ball in the middle of your
stance. 3 When you bring the club back in your back swing try not to
shift too much weight to your right foot or back foot. This is
because it is a shorter swing shot and will be hard to transfer your
weight with you as you swing down. All shots in golf must be
balanced, with the arms and shoulders swing being supported by the
lower body. All body momentum must be forward towards your target on
the down swing and follow through. 4 Take the club back only as far
as you need to, in order to achieve the swing speed you desire. Use
a 3/4 wrist cock at the top of your swing. Cocking your wrists helps
to create more club head speed and back spin. 5 Now swing down at
the ball focusing on hitting the ball before the ground. Make sure
your clip the grass under the ball for good contact. A small divot
taken out after you hit the ball is acceptable.
Relax your wrists in order for them to release through the shot. Your
weight should be shifting from your right foot to your left foot on
the down swing. Your left hip should clear to the left leaving your
right hip free to fire towards the target. 6 Abbreviate your follow
through so the club is about the same height when you finish your
follow through as it was at the top of your back swing. Your thumbs
should be on top of the club, pointing skyward when you are
finished. The pitch shot is one of the tougher shots in golf and
takes a lot of practise to perfect. But if you enjoy the journey of
getting better at your golf game this shot will be a great addition.

Bob's Sockeye
Green
:
Adapt for Pinks too
Sockeye
Green - This fly was custom designed for the Fraser River. When
fishing for sockeye, this is the only fly that I have in my box.
Many people say that the appearance of the fly means very little
when sockeye fishing, however, that theory has been proven wrong
many times. Between my friends and I, we have caught literally
thousands of sockeye over the last 5 years using this fly only.
Sockeye Green
Color: Lime green
Hook: 4 to 8
1. Dress hook
2. Tie in an 1/8 inch strip of lime green edge brite
3. Wrap thread to thorax
4. Wrap an 1/8 inch strip of tinfoil, shiny side up, from the back
of the hook to the thorax and tie off
5. Wrap edge brite to thorax, be sure to overlap each wrap or fly
will come apart after a few fish
6. Tie in a dark green hackle feather, using hackle pliers, wrap
feather to the eye of the hook
7. Tie off and whip finish
Be sure that the hackle is thick and full, sometimes
two
hackle feathers can be used, or to ad variety-- try tying a pink or
orange hackle feather in first then the green over top.
Optional: There is no tail required for this fly, however, when the
Pinks are running in the system you can tie on a pink tail and you
will catch more Pinks than sockeye. Remove the tail and you will
catch more sockeye then Pinks.
If tied correctly, this fly will catch 30 to 50 fish before it
starts to fall apart. I have tried this fly in a variety of colors
but all green seems to work the best except for adding a pink tail
which can be a lot of fun when the Pinks run. I have also tied in a
few strands of flashabou under the hackle with great success. The
only other variation on this fly would be to use yellow hackle
feathers with flashabou, which has also proven to be a killer combo
at times. Bob Ja

For those drifters using ‘bottom bouncing' gear try small
corkies or spin n glo’s as in photo. Anglers are finding success
using 12ft leaders; ie.,use 15lb. main line slip on a piece of
surgical tubing[1/4" long]then a swivel. Insert a piece of pencil
lead into the surgical tubing and on the other end of the swivel
attach a 12 ft 12lb leader with a corkie slipped on the business
end. Tie on a #2 hook using a bait knot -- 'sock it to 'em.'. Note:
the money in the pic is a canadian dime which is 5/8" in diameter.
Also if you have lots of cash to burn ask about the
'Bouncing Betty' rig at your favorite tackle shop.
